Meet the Aulakh’s – Sleepout’s Honorary Family
The Lord’s Place is honored to announce Terry and Gurbir Aulakh and their children,
Anveer (15) and Aisha (10), as its 2022 SleepOut Honorary Family. Since 2015, the Aulakh family has actively participated annually in SleepOut, the Ending Homelessness Breakfast, and the The Lord’s Place rappelling event. They also volunteer regularly at Joshua Thrift Store, including holding clothing drives to benefit the thrift store. In addition, they are extremely active on social media promoting The Lord’s Place and raising awareness. Gurbir works for Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners as a senior manager in information technology (IT). Terry is a senior business systems analyst for CSL Plasma. Anveer is in tenth grade, Aisha is in fourth grade.
“Terry, Gurbir, Anveer, and Aisha are shining examples of how one family can make such a huge difference in the community. It’s beautiful to witness Terry and Gurbir’s generous and caring hearts and how they involve their children in serving our community and helping the homeless. Their volunteerism and servant leadership are inspiring. We are grateful for their partnership and support and happy to name the Aulakh family our 2022 SleepOut Honorary Family,” said Diana Stanley, CEO of The Lord’s Place.
We conducted a brief Q&A with the Aulakh family:
How were you introduced to The Lord’s Place?
In 2015, Gurbir was in The Leadership Palm Beach County program where he met Diana Stanley, the CEO of The Lord’s Place. Through her, he came to know more about The Lord’s Place, its mission, programs, and services that they provide to help build the community.
In what ways do you and your family volunteer and support The Lord’s Place? Why?
We actively participated in various events organized by The Lord’s Place, such as the SleepOut Event, Ending Homelessness Breakfast, and various other events. We volunteer at their SleepOut, Thrift Store, and other programs. With our children, we have conducted four clothing drives to date.
We believe that volunteering, bringing awareness and supporting as a family is beneficial to the community and to us. It is important to help others and give back to the community. It is also beneficial for our family as it builds a sense of helping others and learning about the problems that families face in the community.
Anveer, tell us about the service project that you are doing for The Lord’s Place? Why did you choose The Lord’s Place?
I have created a clothing drive as a service project for The Lord’s Place in order to give clothes to the people who are in need. At first, I didn’t know anything about conducting clothing drives, so I did research by using various sources, such as The Lord’s Place. I found useful information from these sources. For example, location of collection site is a huge factor in determining how successful the clothing drive is. Thus, I used these resources in order to set up a meeting with The Lord’s Place officers.
The Lord’s Place is a great organization that is truly focused and committed to ending homelessness in Palm Beach County. I’ve attended a few Lord’s Place events with my family and have been involved in volunteer service since I was 11 years old. I was greatly influenced by the tremendous effort that this organization has put into helping the community.
Why is it important to have your children involved in your service to help the homeless?
It is beneficial for our children to learn about helping others, bringing awareness and understanding to the issues that we all as a community face.
What is your reaction to being named the 2022 SleepOut Honorary Family?
We are thrilled and very much honored to be selected as this year’s SleepOut Honorary Family. We feel very strongly about this organization and its work for the homeless. It is extremely important to us as a family to give back to our community.
For how many years has your family participated in SleepOut? What does the SleepOut event mean to you?
We have been attending SleepOut since 2015. SleepOut isn’t about pretending to be homeless. We sleep out so homeless families don’t have to. When we sleep out, we’re not just raising awareness–we’re showing these families our commitment to their future.
What would you say to other families to encourage them to get involved with The Lord’s Place?
It is important for others to get involved so that The Lord’s Place can continue their commitment to the homeless community in changing the lives of people in this community so they can have a better life and be self-sufficient.
